Adult Book Review: “The Book Eaters” by @sunyidean
Initially I was drawn to this book because of the quote by @veschwab on the cover recommending it and she was right! It was exactly the fantasy, dark, intriguing read I NEEDED to devour just at this moment. It was like a maze for my mind that had me turning it over and over with the lush back and forth timeline for our heroin Devon. I absolute loved it!
In fact, the idea that many of these characters could consume knowledge by ingesting it, but lacked the ability to write, was utterly fascinating and a catch 22. This author is endlessly creative, but not just that, she has the ability to truly weave an outstanding story, and turns and pivots at all the right moments.
If you enjoyed “The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue” or any darker fantasy series, this is a must-read. Even if fantasy isn’t your normal jam, I think this could be a welcomed introduction to a new genre! It’s got that “stand-out” quality that could reel you in and expand your reading choices. How lovely right? I absolutely recommend this for Fall reading. Now all I do is ponder how I need to eat a book instead of reading it… tabasco sauce anyone?
Brief Synopsis from @goodreads:
Out on the Yorkshire Moors lives a secret line of people for whom books are food, and who retain all of a book’s content after eating it. To them, spy novels are a peppery snack; romance novels are sweet and delicious. Eating a map can help them remember destinations, and children, when they misbehave, are forced to eat dry, musty pages from dictionaries.
Devon is part of The Family, an old and reclusive clan of book eaters. Her brothers grow up feasting on stories of valor and adventure, and Devon—like all other book eater women—is raised on a carefully curated diet of fairytales and cautionary stories.
But real life doesn’t always come with happy endings, as Devon learns when her son is born with a rare and darker kind of hunger—not for books, but for human minds.
